Creative Writing BA(Hons): Course features
What this course offers you
- We teach a range of modes and media, giving you the chance to study and write in a wide range of genres, including:
- short stories;
- the novel;
- non-fiction of various kinds;
- poetry and song lyrics; and
- drama for radio, stage and screen.
- The course has a practical emphasis, leading you through introductory studies and exercises in the craft of writing to increasingly sophisticated rhetorical, theoretical and practical approaches. We encourage you to develop your own voice.
- The course team for Creative Writing includes experienced and enthusiastic lecturers and published writers, with numerous creative credits.
- Guest lectures from distinguished writers, editors and journalists add extra perspectives to the course. Read more in the Events and lectures section.
- Kingston has a reputation for cultural activity and makes for a creative environment. Plus you have easy access to London's West End and the South Bank for theatres, talks, readings and the Poetry Library.
- Our student-edited and run literary magazine, Ripple, is published twice a year, giving students the chance to have their work published.
- We offer our students career advice on how to approach agents and get published, plus on working in publishing/journalism.
- Creative Writing fosters a range of skills desirable to employers including:
- communication skills;
- self-management;
- careful editing and presentation; and
- the ability to work constructively with others.
- Apart from pursuing a career as a writer, Creative Writing students may go on to work in careers such as publishing, journalism, broadcast media, advertising or marketing.
- Some graduates may go on to take the postgraduate masters course in Creative Writing that Kingston offers.
- Language tuition and the opportunity to go on an international exchange are available.
