Christina Michael

Name: Christina Michael
Age: 23
Course: BA(Hons) Creative Writing with Journalism
Level: Completed 2nd year
Route to University: Mature student
Accommodation: Own home

"I left college, to have my son, just before I took my A-levels.  Things can be a little more difficult when you have children but the lecturers have been very supportive and understanding.  They really pump you full of encouragement, providing the reassurance you need to keep going.

''The lecturers are just amazing.  They all have hands-on experience and really know what they are talking about.  One of the best things about the course is its variety.  Nothing is boring because you are always learning something new and the whole programme is really well put together.

''One of the highlights of the course has been the independent writing project.  You have to research all your work and then string it together.  Watching your writing take shape, seeing the final result and learning from different people along the way was a really rewarding experience.

''Next year I plan to do two placements.  One at the children's channel Nickelodeon and one at the Surrey Advertiser, a local news group. I am doing the two different placements to give me an idea of what sort of role I would prefer.  I think I would like to work for a children's magazine.  Or, maybe in a dream world, have my own column one day.

''My advice to anyone coming here is to get involved in university life and have your say.  I was elected as the University women's rep and sat on the Students' Union Council.  It's well worthwhile, as the more involved you are with the University the more you get out of it."

Kelli Bartholet

Name: Kelli Bartholet
Age: 27
Course: BA(Hons) Creative Writing with Journalism
Level: Completed 3rd year
Route to University: International student with Canadian college Diploma
Accommodation: Halls of residence 1st year, shared University property with friends 2nd and 3rd years.

Kelli has completed her final year at Kingston. She is planning to take a Masters in Creative Writing before concentrating on a career as a travel writer.

''I have always kept journals and knew creative writing was something I wanted to do.  I chose to study at Kingston after attending an open day. I met the course leader and grilled her about the degree.  She was able to answer all my concerns.

''The most rewarding aspect of the programme has been seeing my style mature.  I have experimented with different forms of story telling and developed a more disciplined approach to getting ideas onto paper.

''I have also enjoyed attending the readings organised by the Creative Writing Department.  Listening to renowned authors, broadcasters and journalists was really interesting.

''I didn't have any concerns about being a mature student.  I knew there would be people of all ages at the University.  The main struggle I have had, in both disciplines, has been developing confidence in my ability to write to a publishable standard. Overcoming this was as simple as getting feedback from my lecturers so that I knew how to improve my writing for the next assignment.

''I have found the teaching staff to be the University's best asset. All my lecturers are approachable and helpful and have been invaluable mentors over the past three years."
