Kingston offers a unique approach to studying business-related programmes. Teaching, often in small groups, is innovative, interactive and practical, valuing independent learning, critical and lateral thinking, and applying theory to practice.

The course takes a learning by doing approach and half of your programme will take place in a computer lab where you will develop technical and analytical skills relevant to the digital industries.

Assessments reflect the skills and knowledge needed to engage in contemporary working practices, giving you the confidence and competence necessary to succeed in the rapidly changing digital environment. In your final year you will pitch for a live client project, working as a team to provide a relevant digital solution.  Other assessment methods include presentations, business reports, and the development of technical and analytical solutions, both as an individual and part of a team.

Our teaching staff have experience of working in business, teaching and research. A series of guest lectures are delivered by industry practitioners, providing opportunities to contextualise classroom-based learning to real-world business problems.

We offer employment-based activities where employers are invited on campus to participate in specialist networking activities to support your professional development.

Contact hours for this course

The number of learning hours for each module is determined by its credit weighting. For example, for a 30-credit module there are 300 learning hours. This is divided into contact hours (i.e. time spent with academic staff) and independent learning hours (i.e. time spent in studying alone or group work). Normally in the first year,  you will have approximately 16 hours of class contact per week - but you will be expected to do independent study outside of class, some of which will be directed study, eg: homework, assessment and revision etc., with the remaining time available for you to look deeper into particular areas of interest.

Workload for this course

Throughout the programme, there is a strong emphasis on developing the skills employers look for. These include the ability to manage projects and people in a dynamic business environment, and taking a critical perspective on contemporary management issues.

Assignments are designed to be achieved within the set amount of learning hours for each module and are appropriate to the level of study. We encourage a professional work ethic, which includes how to manage your time. A range of additional support is available to students who require it.

Our Academic Skills Centres also provide one-to-one support and advice on the techniques you need to be a successful student including:

  • exam techniques;
  • presentation skills;
  • editing and web skills; and
  • research skills.

During your degree you will develop the independence, creativity and excellent communication skills that we know employers look for in successful graduates.

Assessment

Assignments are designed not just to test what you know, but to help you develop your knowledge, skills and confidence. 

Because we want you to reach your full potential in every assignment, we build in opportunities for practice and 'feed forward' on assessment tasks so that you will know what you need to do to perform at your best when you submit your work.

When we return your work, we give you clear feedback that will show you what you need to work on next time. You'll have the opportunity to discuss the comments on your work one-to-one with your lecturers and your personal tutor.

Personal tutors

When you arrive, we'll introduce you to your personal tutor – the member of academic staff who will keep a particular eye on your progress throughout your time at Kingston University (and after you graduate) and who will show you how to make the best use of all the help and resources that we offer at Kingston University.

Your tutor will give you academic guidance and will make sure that you know how to access our other support services if you need them.

Independent learning

When not attending timetabled teaching sessions (lectures, seminars, workshops, labs, studios etc), you will be expected to continue learning independently through self-study.

Typically, this will involve reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, undertaking research in one of the University’s Learning Resources Centres (LRCs), preparing coursework assignments or revising for examinations or tests.

Your independent learning is supported by a range of excellent facilities including the LRCs and the University’s virtual learning environment, Canvas.

Return of marked work

Helpful feedback on your assessed work is hugely important in enabling you to perform your best. The University makes a commitment to all students that you will receive feedback on all your assessed work within 20 University days* of submission.  
                                                           
* University days count as Monday to Friday – the following are not included:  Saturdays, Sundays, Public Bank Holidays, or when the University is closed during Christmas vacation.

Availability of timetables

Kingston University provides each student with an individualised timetable. Timetables are normally available to students within 48 hours of enrolment.

While we make every effort to ensure timetables are as student-friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place on any day of the week between 9.00am and 6.00pm.

For undergraduate students Wednesday afternoons are normally reserved for sports and cultural activities, but there may be occasions when this is not possible. Timetables for part-time students will depend on the modules selected.
