About this course
Why choose this course?
If you enjoy reading and are interested in exploring the great variety of literature written in English, this course is ideal. It will introduce you to a wide range of literature from Chaucer to current authors, examining the relationship of literature with culture, politics and individual identity.
You can also choose to study English Literature as a joint honours degree alongside another subject. See the course combinations section for more information.
What will you study?
You will study the genres of fiction, drama and poetry. You will consider what fiction is as a genre, learn to interpret poetry from different historical periods and analyse a range of dramatic work. You will examine literature within the social, cultural, critical and political contexts in which it was written. You will also explore contemporary developments in critical and theoretical approaches to text.
