Name: Gerry Archer
Year of graduation: 2000
Current job: teaching English in Japan
"During my time at Kingston, I found myself encouraged to think freely around subjects, with the chance to grow personally and intellectually, developing my own ideas and exploring those of others.
"Since leaving university I have accepted a position to teach English in Japan, which strikes me as an ideal way to earn some money and see some of the world, and could even become a career.
"I would recommend Kingston and its English Literature course to anyone. I had a great time and made friendships that will last a lifetime."
Name: Beverley Watts
Current job: assistant magazine editor
Beverley took time out from her job as a journalist to study English literature at Kingston full time. She gained a breadth of knowledge and became far more disciplined about research, which is an important part of her job.
"My present job is assistant editor on Now magazine. I write features, but a lot of my work involves commissioning them – from celebrity interviews to articles on how to get a 'dream job' or on a couple adopting special needs children.
"I have been to Japan to interview a geisha about her life in Kyoto, photographed grizzly bears in Vancouver Island, and flown to Bulgaria with the charity Orbis, who perform eye operations worldwide on-board their own plane."
