Film BA(Hons): Course features

What this course offers you

  • This course allows you to explore the history of film and various aspects of world cinema. You will examine movies in their social and national contexts, plus investigate phenomena such as film genres and star systems.
  • Full field (single honours) students also take practical modules, covering the production of short video films. You have the chance to script and produce a number of short films.
  • We use a specialist suite of laboratory spaces for the practical video production modules. These have recently been equipped with sophisticated equipment for editing and working on video materials.
  • Teaching comprises a mix of lectures, seminars, workshops, film presentations and tutorial support. Teaching rooms have video projection facilities and the University library has rooms for small-group viewing of video recordings.
  • All our students have access to a range of excellent computing resources and software.
  • An interdisciplinary team from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture teaches the course.  We have backgrounds in film studies, sociology, languages and video production, plus all are actively engaged in research.
  • Studying film will enhance your critical and analytical capabilities, as well as your written and oral communication skills. These are transferable skills demanded by today's employers.
  • The degree will be especially useful if you want to work in the culture, communications and service industries. It will also give you a foundation for postgraduate study, particularly in film-related areas.
