  • Name: Jan Amza
  • Course: Financial Mathematics with Business BSc(Hons)
  • Placement role: Financial controller
  • Placement company: La Fantana SRL (Romania)
  • Year: 2014/15

Why did you decide to do an industrial placement as part of your degree?

Better employment possibilities and synergy with on-going study because you start relating what you learn with practical experience. In my experience this makes the course more interesting and a lot easier to remember.

What was the process for getting a placement and what support did you get from the University?

I applied late for my placement year (after my internship had started), and the Placement Team was very helpful and in a matter of a couple of emails I was registered in the placement programme.

What does your placement role involve?

  • Operational reporting and controlling.
  • Actual vs budget.
  • Sales analysis (eg split of revenue streams).
  • Receivables related reports (eg collections target for sales managers).

How is your typical day – any specific projects were you involved with?

Average office day with Excel-focused work.

What key elements of your job will involve what you had learned from your course?

Programming and financial management.

What job will you be seeking when you graduate?

Financial department of a co-operate or one of the four audit firms.

What advice would you give to the students who are thinking of applying for placement?

They shouldn't see a placement year as something optional that they might do if they can be bothered. They should see as something compulsory that is required by the industry.
