Kingston's Fine Art students visit China

20'Come In' project in Shanghai10 saw Head of School Louis Nixon lead a team students to develop a project with Shanghai University around a conceptual pavilion for 'Better city, Better life' as part of the World Expo 2010. The submission won a government commendation.

Following on from this, Louis and his team from Kingston University carried out another project 'Come On' in Caoyang Square, in the Caoyang district of Shanghai in collaboration with Shanghai University. Caoyang Square is a unique and very special public space, built at the beginning of Chinese communism as a utopian vision of urban communal living, and one of the last remaining examples within the rapidly changing context of Shanghai.

The work was produced as part of a larger exhibition and public art project with internationally invited artists including Marjolin Dijkman, Shelagh Keeley, Zhuo, Qui Jia, Han Feng. This project provided the real-life opportunity for the artists to test out some of ideas and explore possibilities for public art within the context of a city preparing for the World Expo in 2010.
