Fieldwork

Fieldwork is an important part of our Forensic Science teaching because:

  • it brings the subject to life;
  • it provides on-the-job training;
  • you can apply what is being taught to real situations and study in context; and
  • it helps you develop the analytical skills employers demand.

Scene of crime house

We have our own semi-detached house, which is used to recreate crime scenes. You will visit frequently during Levels 2 and 3, gaining invaluable experience.

You will consider every aspect of investigating a crime scene from beginning to end, including:

  • deciding on the area that needs to be cordoned off to ensure that no evidence is lost;
  • searching for fingerprints and footprints at points of entry and exit;
  • looking for DNA samples and suspicious substances such as narcotics inside the house;
  • investigating your samples in the University's labs; and
  • finally being called as an expert witness and cross examined by a real barrister in a mock court.

Mortuary

You have the chance to experience a real autopsy during visits to a local mortuary.
