What this course offers you
- History offers a stimulating degree, helping you understand the development of the modern world. It also helps you form your own opinions and appreciate problems facing society today.
- You can explore a wide range of subjects in British, European, American and international history at Kingston, including:
- the British Empire;
- American history;
- the Holocaust;
- women's history;
- the Early Modern period;
- British society and culture in the 20th century; and
- French history.
- You will have the chance to specialise in selected subject areas, so you can pursue your own interests, working independently, especially through your dissertation.
- Kingston has been highly recommended for the quality of its teaching. Our History degree was rated as "excellent" in a recent QAA assessment (the Government's Quality Assurance Agency).
- Our teaching is underpinned by high quality research - most of the tutors are Fellows of The Royal Historical Society.
- You will encounter a wide range of assessment and teaching methods, including supervision on a one-to-one basis.
- You'll have the opportunity to do a work placement - previous students have worked at the National Archives, the Public Record Office and the Royal Society of Arts. Language tuition and the opportunity to go on an international exchange are also available.
- You'll have access to:
- high quality computing facilities and a designated history librarian;
- the databases for 19th century census returns and parish registers via our research centre;
- local and national archives (Kingston is close to the National Archives).
- Kingston's historic setting means you are surrounded by important landmarks, such as the town's ancient marketplace, Hampton Court Palace and Ham House. Central London is just 25 minutes away, home to some of the UK's top museums and historic sites.
- Career opportunities include teaching, journalism, law, museum work, the Home Office, local government administration and retailing.
- History graduates often take a further qualification, such as a research degree, a postgraduate certificate of education, a law conversion course or a library qualification.
