Law (with Arts and Social Sciences subjects) BA(Hons): Learning support

Classes

Law lectures are supported by smaller seminar groups and workshops. Many classes are in an interactive format. This means we encourage you to think about your views and put forward your ideas. It makes learning fun, interesting and easier because you're taking part in the classes and thinking about how to apply what's being taught to current situations.

Skills programme

We have an excellent reputation for our innovative skills teaching. This provides you with the practical skills you need if you wish to practise law. It gives Kingston graduates a substantial head start if they go on to do a legal vocational course.

We teach skills such as client negotiation, interviewing and debating in interactive classes through role play and games. In one class you will act as a lawyer, for example, with a role-playing client who won't fully explain their problem. You will have to develop interviewing techniques to get the full story from the client and then decide what legal steps to take. In another scenario the class holds a trial, with practising barristers acting as judges.

Competitions

There are competitions at all years of the course. These give you the opportunity to hone your skills, gain recognition and add weight to your CV whilst having fun. For further information, see the Links with business and industry section.

Additional academic support

There is a range of support available, so, whatever difficulties you face, we'll help you to achieve your full potential.

Tutors

Tutors have set office hours, so it's easy to get one-to-one help and support should you need it. Each year of the course has three support tutors. They are there to provide extra assistance throughout that year. In addition, module leaders and course leaders are available to help where required.

Learning Resource Centre

The Learning Resource Centre provides a wealth of material, such as law texts and journals, to support your studies. Long opening hours mean that you can use the Centre at your convenience, plus the dedicated law librarian can provide specialist help finding materials.

Web-based support

StudySpace

StudySpace is a web-based learning management system that provides access to a host of information and material to assist with your studies. Its resources vary from module to module. For example, it might include:

  • subject guides;
  • lecture notes;
  • presentations; and
  • even sound and video clips.

Other useful features are online discussion forums (bulletin boards), a virtual classroom and a drop box (for online submission of coursework).
