Understanding the role of media and the influence of modern culture on society is relevant to every organisation that needs to communicate its aims and interests.
Lecturers
Many of our course lecturers are experienced media professionals. Their teaching is backed up with the latest industry expertise and you have access to practical help and career advice from someone with inside knowledge.
Examples of the calibre of course teachers are digital media lecturers Maria Mencia, Fleeta Seigel and Landé Pratt:
- Landé Pratt previously worked for the British Film Institute. One of her roles was to project manage the creation of the online film archive, screenonline. Focusing on the history of British film and television, this in-depth and comprehensive online educational archive is internationally acclaimed.
- Fleeta Seigel specialises in digital interfacing and was part of the team that won the prestigious 2004 ADE prize for its 'interactive performance'. The prize was awarded by the European Commission's Culture 2000 programme for innovative communication forms between the stage and the audience. The win resulted in the show being staged across Europe and in the festival that launched the UK's successful 2012 Olympic bid. Read more about Fleeta.

The Degree Show
The Degree Show is designed to demonstrate the diversity and richness of student work from the two Schools of Humanities and Performance and Screen Studies. It is a celebration of students' achievements during their time at Kingston University.
Local press are invited to the event and the show also aims to ensure that the calibre of Kingston graduates is recognised. It potentially offers the chance to enhance your CV and further prove your ability to prospective employers.
Extra Curricular Programme
We offer a lively extra-curricular programme of activities, designed to cater to all students' interests. Activities have ranged from demonstrations and readings to workshops and talks. Visitors have included:
- novelists;
- poets;
- film makers;
- actors; and
- academics.
As well as being interesting and enjoyable, the programme gives you the opportunity to meet people renowned for their talent and to gain from their professional advice. Recent events have included:
- Maggie Gee, highly acclaimed writer of 14 books including The White Family, reading from her latest novel The Flood
- Ben Arogundade, journalist and author of Black Beauty, discussing racism in the media and talking about his collaboration with Hollywood actor Laurence Fishburne on a film adaptation of his novel Loveless;
- Paul Bailey, broadcaster and award-winning writer of books, and TV/radio plays, reading from his work;
- Professor Maria Way, Gregorian University, talking about the relationship between the media and the Vatican;
- Emeritus Professor of Forensic Linguistics, Malcolm Coulthard, Birmingham University, talking about the relationship between language and the law and reading from his work on plagiarism;
- Mike Gayle, freelance journalist and best-selling author (His 'n' Hers, My Legendary Girlfriend, Dinner for Two), reading from his work;
- Liz Jensen, award winning novelist, reading from her work The Ninth Life of Louis Drax; and
- Jane Yeh, course lecturer and poet shortlisted for the Forward Poetry Prize, reading from her work.
