Media Technology BSc(Hons): What our students say

Student profiles

Don't just take our word for it – here's what some of our current and recent students say about what it's like to study at Kingston.

"I have always been fascinated with all things interactive and multimedia. As I'm also keen on getting more involved with the web, this is the perfect joint honours combination for me! I believe studying two subjects cultivates wider-thinking and makes you more open-minded.

"I came to the UK from Vietnam, and found that most things were different here. It was a bit disorientating at first, but after being in Kingston for some time I love it here. Although my second language is French rather than English, I believe that coming to the UK was the right choice – the opportunities, the environment, the culture and the people have all been excellent. Adapting is easy and after a month or so, you're sure to fit in.

"Kingston upon Thames is a fun place to live, which is great if you need a break from the pressure of your studies. Freshers' Fayre is definitely worth going to as it helps you meet new people and make friends.

"I found that the core part of my course was very well structured. The skills you pick up in your first year create a solid base to build on as the course progresses. The opportunities to develop your skills in group and individual projects were also very helpful.

"I'm currently on a sandwich year placement, working as a client-side developer at News Interactive Specials, which involves supporting the BBC's news, sport and weather website. Our team works alongside journalists, designers and software developers, which is the best combination you can get to produce interesting news stories for the web.

"The work I do ranges from supporting domestic news, sport and weather (maintenance work and daily bug and inquiry resolving tasks) to developing back-end functionality for special news stories, finding innovative and accessible ways to deliver the news via the web.

"The Web Technologies module I took at Kingston has been really helpful in giving me a head-start in the job. And the media technology modules have helped me work better alongside the design team and get a sense of how user-centred interactivity should function.

"If you're currently thinking about coming to university, I'd recommend taking some time to decide what you want to do and go for a joint honours degree if you can't choose between two subjects. Work hard (but not too hard!) and you'll get the results you expected."

"I've always been fascinated with the creative industries and design, but I also love technology and the way things work. Media Technology, despite its name, is actually a marriage of technical and creative skills and applying these skills to create media images.

"I chose this course because I felt it covered a broad range of subjects. I wanted the experience of programming, electronics and 3D work, along with areas that I am familiar with, such as editing and compositing.

"For me, the highlight of the degree has to be the third year, as you are allowed pretty much free reign to create whatever you wish using the knowledge you have gained from the past two years. It's a lot of work, but it's also quite exciting. We've begun to experiment with blue-screens and compositing programs, which open up a completely new world of ideas and possible things to create.

"I find most of my classes to be interesting, especially when lecturers bring their industry experience into the theory. The teachers are very good, they know their stuff – we have some great lecturers who make seemingly drab concepts interesting and amusing. All the tutors are easy to contact for one-on-one help, either face-to-face or via email, which is extremely handy. One thing I really appreciated when doing my assignments was that I could email my lecturer with any queries and I usually got a response within a day.

"I've found that University involves a lot more than just attending lessons and doing the work set – the focal point is independent study and a love for the course that you're doing. Media Technology has been invaluable for giving me a clearer (and more realistic) indication of future career options. I'd like to work in-house for a design studio and maybe freelance as a photographer. Eventually, I wish to have my own design business working on content production for various media – be it print, web, video or sound."
