Product Design BSc(Hons): Links with business and industry
How we work with industry partners
Staff
Many members of staff also work in relevant industry sectors. This means that their teaching includes up-to-date professional experience. They can:
- tell you what life in industry is really like; and
- help you balance inspiring, challenging work with the needs of your client.
Professional experience
We make sure that you gain a real insight into professional working life so collaborations with industry are a course feature. Kingston students have worked with:
- GSK;
- Motorola,;
- Sony;
- IKEA;
- London Transport;
- Lego; and
- information service Bloomburg.
Competitions
We encourage you to participate in international competitions and high profile events. Outside companies set projects, often awarding placements or prizes to the best. This can make a great addition to your CV. Our exceptional achievements in major design competitions and film festivals mean employers appreciate the calibre of Kingston Design School graduates.
For example, Owen Hissey won the John Gillard Award in the 2003 Design and Art Directors' Student Awards. The judges were impressed with his design for a reading light, which was activated by picking up the book and deactivated by returning it to rest. The light also conveniently saved the reader's page. Owen is now working as a freelance designer for Habitat.
