Don't just take our word for it – here's what students say about what it's like to study at Kingston University.

Course: Real Estate Management BSc(Hons)
Award: Xcel Built Environment Student of the Year
"Kingston University has helped to produce some great talent and is now recognised within the industry as one of the top universities for the surveying profession. There are many opportunities available here – including the DTZ Challenge, the European Real Estate Challenge in Berlin (for which I was nominated this year, and hope to participate in again next year after I've completed my placement), the projects abroad, and the opportunity to take a year out to work in the property sector.
"The thing I like best about the course is the number of practical assessments. Surveying itself is not something that can be just taught in a lecture room – every year there are group and individual projects. The most recent one I took part in was held in Dublin, where I had the pleasure of meeting leading industry professionals and developers. There have been mock arbitration hearings for my law module, which I have thoroughly enjoyed.
"The practical work helps you gain a deeper understanding of the profession as well as putting your own learning into practice. My current year placement means I am now working for one of the largest valuation offices in the country.
"The course has done wonders in terms of my personal development. The number of presentations that we need to do each year has helped me to build up my confidence and improve existing skills such as effective leadership, teamwork and excellent communication skills. My level of maturity has increased immensely through independent learning.
"The University is a sociable place – you can develop some great relationships with the lectures and other students. There are also many social activities which you can participate in, with a student ball every year and specific events for surveying students.
"I was nominated by the University for the Xcel Built Environment Student of the Year Award and was the first person from the University to win such an award, which is not only fantastic recognition for my own achievements but also for the University."
Name: Olivia Wood
Course: Real Estate Management BSc(Hons)
Year of graduation: 2009
Award: Winner of the RICS Surrey Local Association Student Award 2009
"The Real Estate Management BSc(Hons) at Kingston is a well-rounded surveying course. During the first year I enjoyed learning about a wide range of competencies relevant to the surveying profession, ranging from building construction to law and valuation.
"This varied approach gave me the chance to work out which areas interested me the most. The content then became more specific towards the end of the course, which gave me a thorough grounding for the general practice side of surveying.
"During my time at Kingston I discovered the importance of self-motivation to keeping on top of deadlines and managing workload. My tutors' guidance and advice ensured that I performed to my best ability. I found that they were always willing to discuss, and where possible solve, any issues that arose. I felt particularly supported during my final year because by this point I had built strong relationships, which made it easier to ask for help and advice.
"Successfully completing the course taught me that I was capable of succeeding within this area and gave me the motivation to find a job role that challenges me and to work my way up the career ladder. However, the greatest impact the course has had on me is a growth in confidence. By gaining a better understanding of the industry I am able to talk confidently, which is vital to success – if a client sees that you're confident of your abilities they'll be assured that you are right for the job."
