Social Work BA(Hons): After you graduate

What our graduates say

Check out what our graduates have gone on to do and how studying at Kingston helped them achieve their goals.

Name: Sara Jane

Sara Jane took a couple of years out after completing her A-levels to gain some work experience. She then took a degree course in family and child care, with the Diploma in Social Work (the equivalent of what is now the Social Work BA).

"I took a post as a community worker for a church and worked with children, young people and the elderly in a variety of settings, including drop-in centres, schools and people's homes. At the same time, I worked part-time for a charity supporting people with HIV and AIDS and also educating young people in schools, by raising awareness and giving practical advice surrounding HIV and AIDS. I progressed to the role of community support worker going into people's homes. I also spent some time working in orphanages in Romania.

"I'd always wanted to work with people, right from an early age, and social work seemed right for me. My work experience confirmed this choice. I saw a lot of injustice and I felt I wanted to do something about it. To be able to do something for other people was what drove me on.

"The degree course has helped me ground my experience. It has been really interesting to learn about government policy and law and to appreciate the difficulty of putting theory into practice."

Where this course will take you

This is an exciting time to be entering social work. The status of the profession has been enhanced by the introduction of the degree-level qualification and will be further developed by the Social Work Reform Board's programme of change, including the development of the College of Social Work.

There are excellent employment and career progression opportunities in the statutory, voluntary and private sectors for qualified practitioners. Social workers increasingly work in integrated interprofessional teams in areas such as social care, health, education and criminal justice settings.
