Sociology BSc(Hons): What our students say

Student profiles

Don't just take our word for it – here's what some of our current and recent students say about what it's like to study at Kingston.

Name: Alison Clark
Age: 22
Course: BSc Sociology
Level: Graduated
Route to University: A-levels
Accommodation: Halls of residence

"I came to Kingston because I had decided I wanted to go to a London university and, after visiting several, it was the one I liked best. The town has a nice community feel.

"I have found the teaching at University much more relaxed than it was in my sixth form. At school you're fed everything you need to learn to pass exams, whereas university is self-motivated learning. The lecturers do often email you though with additional information and things of interest that you might want to read.

"I was attracted to the Sociology degree because I liked the variety of topics it covers; psychology, politics, history - all things I was hungry to learn more about. Degrees are supposed to be harder than A-levels, but I didn't find that because I was reading about stuff I was interested in, rather than just learning information to churn out.

"Sociology is a really broad subject, which is ideal for me because I don't want to decide what I want to do with my life just yet. I have a job interview for the role of support worker and I think this is the area I would initially like to go into. The degree has allowed me to study subjects I am interested in without narrowing my career options to one field."
