Teaching and assessment for this course

Teaching includes field trips, workshops, practical activities, lectures, problem-solving approaches and small group sessions for learning support. We have excellent library and virtual learning environment resources, and a specialist team to help you get the most out of them.

Assessment includes essays, portfolios, posters and presentations.

Contact hours for this course

The number of learning hours for each module is determined by its credit weighting. For example, for a 30 credit module there would be 300 learning hours. This would be divided into contact hours (e.g. time spent with your core course team), placement hours and independent learning hours (including study, tutorials, clinical visits, skills practice, etc.)

Workload for this course

In Year 1 learning takes place primarily in the classroom or on field trips enabling you to develop a baseline in knowledge, values and skills. These core activities occupy ten hours every week. Additionally, you will have the option to attend academic writing classes, discussion groups such as Film Club and department seminars. Student support or tutorial time will occupy up to two hours per semester.

In Year 2 the first teaching block takes place primarily in the classroom with the addition of some field trips. This involves nine hours contact time per week with additional tutorial time. During the second teaching block, the focus is on practice experience.  You will prepare for and debrief from placement with 16 hours teaching time. You will undertake a six week practice placement (3-5 days per week, as appropriate) which runs from early February until March and involves contact during the practice setting's opening hours.

In the final year, during the first teaching block, you will undertake a second eight week practice placement (3-5 days per week) running from mid October until mid December. Academic teaching will take place in blocks in the weeks both before and after practice placement and typically involves six hours contact time per week with additional tutorial time. During teaching block 2 you will return to the classroom and can expect contact time of 7-9 hours per week with additional tutorial time.

During your degree you will develop the independence, creativity and excellent communication skills that we know employers look for in successful graduates.

Assessment

Assignments are designed not just to test what you know, but to help you develop your knowledge, skills and confidence. 

Because we want you to reach your full potential in every assignment, we build in opportunities for practice and 'feed forward' on assessment tasks so that you will know what you need to do to perform at your best when you submit your work.

When we return your work, we give you clear feedback that will show you what you need to work on next time. You'll have the opportunity to discuss the comments on your work one-to-one with your lecturers and your personal tutor.

Personal tutors

When you arrive, we'll introduce you to your personal tutor – the member of academic staff who will keep a particular eye on your progress throughout your time at Kingston University (and after you graduate) and who will show you how to make the best use of all the help and resources that we offer at Kingston University.

Your tutor will give you academic guidance and will make sure that you know how to access our other support services if you need them.

Independent learning

When not attending timetabled teaching sessions (lectures, seminars, workshops, labs, studios etc), you will be expected to continue learning independently through self-study.

Typically, this will involve reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, undertaking research in one of the University’s Learning Resources Centres (LRCs), preparing coursework assignments or revising for examinations or tests.

Your independent learning is supported by a range of excellent facilities including the LRCs and the University’s virtual learning environment, Canvas.

Return of marked work

Helpful feedback on your assessed work is hugely important in enabling you to perform your best. The University makes a commitment to all students that you will receive feedback on all your assessed work within 20 University days* of submission.

Availability of timetables

Kingston University provides each student with an individualised timetable. Timetables are normally available to students within 48 hours of enrolment.

While we make every effort to ensure timetables are as student-friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place on any day of the week between 9.00am and 6.00pm.

For undergraduate students Wednesday afternoons are normally reserved for sports and cultural activities, but there may be occasions when this is not possible. Timetables for part-time students will depend on the modules selected.
