"Don't give up - follow your passion"

clearing-success"I had initially applied for a Forensics course, doubting my capabilities in pursuing a degree in pure chemistry. On results day I was convinced to switch from forensics and follow my passion with chemistry and the rest is history. I suppose I was always a chemist at heart – I just required the extra push following my disappointment with my A level results.

"The chances are that if you are going through the clearing process you may not have achieved your expected results. This can be very disheartening and as a result can be easy for students to begin to question their ability.

"The best advice I can give is to never lose sight of what you think you are suited for. What you are studying is of upmost importance and not where. If you think you can do it, you probably can, no application can truly reflect your own personal drive and thoughts. So, in the wake of a challenging situation, don't lose sight of what you academically identify with.

"I felt like Kingston had given me a chance to prove within an academic sphere that if given the freedom to work in the way I wanted to, I could capitalise on what I cared about.

"The environment here allowed me to continue personal development and upon reflection it got me back on my feet following a tumultuous time at A level.

"It's a massive credit to the department and the amazing members of staff who run it; the dedication to their students is astounding and the open-door policy really helps to develop relationships. I think Kingston was the perfect place for me to go to."

Rob went on to complete a BSc (Hons) Chemistry (1st class) and was winner of the Dean's prize for outstanding contribution to the Faculty and the Royal Society of Chemistry (Downland Section) for the best performance in the BSc Chemistry course.

Since graduating from Kingston University Rob has secured a funded masters of research and PhD position at Imperial College London.
