"Everything happens for a reason"

clearing-pharmacyHere, Katie shares her pathway to academic success via Clearing at Kingston University and advice for those about to go through the process in 2017.

"I had always wanted to study pharmacy and I was, understandably, very disappointed on results day when I didn't get the A level grades to pursue my dream. I received an offer from my second choice university to study pharmacology but I decided that actually I would have rather chosen to study pharmacology at Kingston. I declined my place at my second choice university and rang Kingston University.

"The clearing process for me was fairly simple. I was swiftly put through to the department in which I wanted to apply (SEC Pharmacology BSc), had my application reviewed, and was offered a place there and then over the phone. I had a few hours to collate the relevant information and accept my place through UCAS. I picked up my results at 10am and had a confirmed place through clearing by 2pm.

"There were many reasons why I chose Kingston. The first was, being a country girl, I wanted to be able to experience life in the city and be close to London. The second was the choice of course. The opportunity to transfer to pharmacy after the first year of pharmacology gave me some flexibility so I could be sure I was committing to the right degree. Lastly, being a rower, I had heard that Kingston Rowing Club has one of the best stretches of water to row on in central London.

"At the end of my first year, although I obtained the grades to transfer to the pharmacy course at Kingston, I decided to pursue pharmacology and, looking back, it was probably the best decision I made. Everything happens for a reason!

"I think the best advice would be not to panic and assume that it is the end of the world, because it isn't. Even if your university or your course isn't your first choice it will probably be a decision you will not regret. I received tremendous support from all of my lecturers throughout my degree and post-degree in regards to references and keeping touch. I was able to graduate with a first-class degree in  pharmacology  which allowed me to pursue my education at Cambridge! I was given all of the tools to open up my future; it is just a case of making use of them to the best of your ability. It's your choice.

"My greatest achievement is being able to succeed in the face of adversity. I have not always been highly academic, nor have many things come naturally to me, but I pride myself on how hard I have worked to get where I am today. Through the opportunities provided to be by Kingston, mixed with my drive to succeed, I was able to harness my strengths into a first class degree. If anybody ever tells me I can't, I'll show them I will.
