This module explores dress and appearance within the wider context of gender and identity. It looks at:
- dress and appearance through the changing conditions of production and consumption – to show the role of dress and fashion in personal and social identities;
- dress history – and the varied disciplines such as sociology, anthropology and art history from which it has emerged;
- the role of media and cultural production in the representation and construction of visual identity; and
- the relationship between the 'self' and 'society'.
