Head Start summer school programme

Day 1: Tuesday 4 August 2015

Find out more about the Head Start programme, and the Compact Scheme and meet the Compact Scheme team and student ambassadors you will be working with.

11.45am–12.30pm Understanding university
In this session you will gain an understanding of university jargon and find out about the key differences between school/college and university.

12.30pm–1.15pm Lunch  
1.15pm–2.15pm Faculty group workshops
In this session, you will split into groups (depending on the faculty you
will be studying in) and meet with key teaching and support staff:

    Art, design and architecture: JG3013
    Arts and social sciences: JG2002
    Business: JG5002
    Law: JG3011
    Nursing: JG3003
    Midwifery: JG3014
    Social work: JG2012
    Education: JG3010
    Biosciences pharmacy and chemistry: JG3004
    Geography, engineering, computing and maths: JG3002 
 
2.15pm–2.30pm Break  
2.30pm–3.30pm Top tips
Hear from current students about their top tips for surviving
your first semester.

3.30pm–5.00pm Campus tours
Take a tour of the campus where you will be studying with one of our experienced student ambassadors.
 
5.00pm Close for the day
This is the end of Day 1, for those who do not wish to come to the evening social you are free to depart. Those staying in halls of residence and those who wish to stay for the evening social will make their way to Seething Wells halls of residence for a BBQ.
 
5.30pm–6.00pm Seething Wells halls of residence
Time to settle into your room.
 
6.00pm–onwards BBQ evening social at Seething Wells halls of residence  

Day 2: Wednesday 5 August 2015

11.00am–12.00noon Question time – student support services
A chance to ask the student support panel about the huge range of support available to you at Kingston, including accommodation, student wellbeing, student engagement and much more.

12.15pm–1.00pm Workshops
In this session you will be able to choose one of the following workshops to attend. Some of these workshops will be repeated on Day 3 where you will have the opportunity to attend a different session of your choice:

a) Mature learner workshop: JG3014
b) Disability and dyslexia support: JG3013
c) Introduction to the LRC: JG4004
d) Study skills – note taking, scanning, skimming and presenting: JG3003
e) KU Cares – support for care leavers: JG2012
f) Numeracy support (Maths Aid): JG3004

2.00pm–2.45pm Managing your money
This session will be led by our Student Funding team and will include information and guidance on managing your money at university and living on a budget.

Day 3: Thursday 6 August 2015

Top tips on essential skills to ensure you stay organised at university, including the importance of attendance, time management skills, organisational skills and studying independently.

Find out about all those essential skills you will need during your time at Kingston. This will be a fun and interactive way to end Head Start, looking at working as a team and presentation skills.

See who the lucky winners are of the Head Start competitions. Your chance to win a IPad, amongst many other amazing prizes. A chance for us all to look back at the event so far, have you had all your questions answered?
