About this course
Why choose this course?
This degree brings together the analysis of images, objects and environments to develop your understanding of key issues in contemporary culture. Its multidisciplinary approach is designed to give you a critical understanding of the historical dynamics that have shaped the meanings of objects and images in the modern world. You will gain valuable skills of analysis, communication and presentation, together with the ability to conduct research across a range of sites such as libraries, museums and galleries.
You can also choose to study Visual and Material Culture as a joint honours degree alongside another subject. See the 'course combinations' section for more information.
What will you study?
You will explore a stimulating range of images, environments, texts and objects, developing skills of visual and textual analysis and historical understanding. Focusing on the often more everyday contexts of visual and material life, core classes include investigations of mass culture and advertising, the role and significance of new media in society, the importance of fashion and gender in the construction of personal identity, and the cultural experience of the city.
