About the School of Life Sciences

The School of Life Sciences was founded in April 1989. There are presently 50 academic staff in the School, as well as two research fellows and over 40 research students. It has grown rapidly in recent years and is now the largest school in the Faculty of Science, offering a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the Life and Technological Sciences

The School staff is composed of anatomists, biochemists, biomedical scientists, ecologists, forensic scientists, media technologists, molecular biologists, nutritionists, parasitologists, pharmacologists, physicists and sports scientists. In addition to our full time-staff we also have a number of experienced part-time lecturing staff who contribute to our teaching across a range of courses.

The School has invested heavily in the development of its laboratories for teaching and research into subjects such as biochemistry, microbiology, histology, anatomy, immunology, cell biology, nutrition, radiotracer studies, physiology and sports science (including biomechanics and an environmental testing chamber) and specialist instrumentation laboratories.

The School has also been responsible for the development of a suite of postgraduate courses in Biomedical Sciences. Students may choose to take just a Postgraduate Certificate in Biomedical Sciences or go on to study for a Postgraduate Diploma and following a research project, a MSc in Biomedical Science, all of which are Accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science.
