About
I joined Kingston in 1992 and served as Field Leader of English Literature and Deputy Head of the School of Humanities. I was Head of the School of Humanities between 2003 and 2013. I co-founded Kingston University Press and created the UK's first MFA course in Creative Writing, as well as the MA in Publishing. I additionally directed the Kingston Writing School from 2011 to 2017.
My general research area is 19th and 20th century American and English literature with a specialism in literature of the American South, and I have published articles in a range of journals, writing particularly about the fiction of William Faulkner and the context of American Pragmatism, and co-edited a book with Manchester University Press on Englishness.
I am currently in the process of revising my textbook on essay writing entitled Writing Better Essays: A Simple Rhetorical Guide to Process, Structure and Coherence for a second international edition to be published by Equinox Press in 2021.
I became Emeritus Senior Fellow in 2017.
