About
After graduation from Moscow State University in 1976, I obtained a PhD degree at the Institute of Molecular Biology, Moscow (1981). In 1981-1992 I was working in the area of molecular bacteriology. In 1993 I moved to Reading University, UK where I studied molecular mechanisms of protein secretion and quorum sensing. During my work at the Department of Medical Microbiology at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London (1993-1996) I studied Campylobacter jejuni, which is the major causative agent of foodborne gastrointestinal infections worldwide, revised physical and genetic maps of C. jejuni and developed a stream-lined procedure for the analysis of bacterial genomes. During my work at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London (1999-2008) I studied molecular biology and virulence factors of various bacterial pathogens, as well as mechanisms of lipo-oligosaccharide biosynthesis and protein glycosylation in C. jejuni. The results of our pioneering work on genome sequencing of C. jejuni and Yersinia pestis Genome Sequencing Projects published in Nature (2000-2001) attracted a record number of citations. Subsequent collaborative studies led to the discovery of C. jejuni capsule, detailed investigation of biochemistry and genetics (molecular mechanisms of phase variation) of capsular polysaccharide (CPS) and a discovery of its extracellular form. Together with my colleagues, I also studied flagella phase variation, developed microarray-based signature-tagged (STM) method allowing the discovery of novel virulence factors of pathogenic bacteria. My studies at Kingston University (since 2009) involved the investigation of probiotic bacteria, molecular mechanisms of bacterial attachment to host cells and deciphering of draft and complete genome sequences of a number of pathogenic, probiotic and environmental bacteria. The results of my research have led to a number of publications in high ranking journals with over 10,150 citations (Google Scholar, as of 5 November 2022).
