Certificate in Education alumni – Honorary Degrees 2020

Eligibility

We want to celebrate the achievements of our former students. After a special resolution was passed by the Kingston University Senate, if you left Gipsy Hill College or Kingston Polytechnic before 1979 with a Certificate in Education (Cert Ed), you are now eligible to be awarded an Honorary Degree in Education from Kingston University.

Please note that we are unfortunately unable to award this Honorary Degree posthumously.

Attending a Ceremony

Save the date:

  • Thursday 23rd July 2020
  • Friday 24th July 2020

On one of above days, the University will host a special ceremony for the Conferment of Honorary Degrees. This special ceremony will be part of our graduation programme for all new Kingston University graduates.

The Conferment of Honorary Degree ceremony is open to anyone who fits the eligibility criteria mentioned above. The ceremony will be held in the Rose Theatre in Kingston, with a celebration reception held afterwards.

We are able to offer one guest ticket only for the ceremony. However, you can bring further guests on the day.

If you would like to attend this ceremony, you will be able to book your ticket online in early March until mid-May 2020.

Tickets will be available on a first come first serve basis and booking may close early. Depending on demand, we may consider running two ceremonies on the selected day.

Cost of ceremony

The ceremony will be free of charge for alumni to attend.

Guest tickets will be charged at £27, which is in line with all graduation ceremonies. You will receive your Honorary Degree certificate and a copy of our commemorative Honorary Degree ceremony programme, and be invited to a reception after the ceremony.

There will be a further charge of approximately £45 for the hire of your full graduation outfit (hat, hood and gown) payable to our graduation partners Graduate Gowning Company, after booking. We hope that all honorary graduands will want to wear formal academic dress for the occasion. However, this is not compulsory.

There will also be the opportunity to purchase graduation photos on the day.

Receiving your Honorary Degree Certificate

You do not need to attend a ceremony to accept your Honorary Degree.

If you would like to accept your Honorary Degree by post, please apply online in early March until mid-May 2020. If you apply during this time, your name will appear in our commemorative honorary degree ceremony programme and you will be sent a copy with your certificate.

We will endeavour to send certificates out shortly after our ceremonies take place. However, please note that due to the amount of eligible recipients – as many as 4,000 – we are unable to confirm by when individual certificates will be dispatched, but hope that it will be by the end of October.

We know that there will be eligible alumni that we will not be able to reach with this information before the end of the booking period. We will still accept applications for certificates after Sunday 10 May, but they will be posted later and names will not be included in the programme.

Update your details

So you will be notified of the opening of the booking dates, please update your contact details with Kingston University alumni at educationhons@kingston.ac.uk.

We reserve the right to check and verify bookings to the ceremony and applications for receiving Honorary Degree certificates from Kingston University. At the point of booking, or shortly afterwards, we may ask for evidence of your original Certificate in Education award or further evidence of attendance.

We know that over time, documents will be misplaced; however, Kingston University is not able to supply replacements or copies of original documents and certificates to alumni who achieved awards prior to 1992.

Spread the word

We are making every effort to contact as many of our alumni as possible. We do not have contact details for many and we are working with records that are over 40 years old, so if you know of anyone who may be eligible to receive an Honorary Degree (based on the criteria listed above), please do pass this information on to them.

Congratulations

Congratulations, Honorary Class of 2020. We look forward to welcoming you to Kingston!
