This is a non-credit-bearing module for students studying BSc (Hons) Biochemistry and BSc (Hons) Biological Sciences which must be passed in order to achieve a degree accredited by the Royal Society of Biology. It is designed to record satisfactory completion of a range of key practical skills and to provide a record of a student's achievement of competence in such skills. Students will receive a portfolio record of their competence at the end of the year to demonstrate their experience to future employers.
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

To pass the module, a student must satisfactorily complete 75% of the identified techniques. Students will be provided with the opportunity to reflect on a 'failed' observation and provided with an immediate reassessment opportunity to rectify the deficiency as well as a further opportunity, if needed, for reassessment in the summer.

It IS a requirement that the major element of assessment is passed in order to achieve an overall pass for the module. This module is assessed on a pass/fail basis. To pass the module, 75% of the key laboratory skills must be completed satisfactorily. The module must be passed to be awarded a degree accredited by the Royal Society of Biology. If the module is failed, a student is not normally permitted to repeat the module in a subsequent year unless exceptional circumstances beyond a student's control require reassessment in all level 5 modules.
Relevant guidance, instruction and reading are provided in the credit-bearing modules comprising the student's programme of study at level 5.
