Summary

This module consists of a series of events designed to support students through the final stage of employability. It will help students reflect on their placement experiences and to provide careers information to support their employability after graduation. This module will support the activities provided by the Careers and Employability Service.

During the year, they will build an on-line profile indicating their progress with their preparation to employment. Students will work with faculty staff, including their personal tutor and the Business Experience Team and the Careers and Employability team.

Aims

  • To support students in their reflection upon their Placement experience, drawing learnings on skills and behaviours acquired to decide upon employment choices and career prospects.
  • To enhance student's ability and self-confidence to operate in an employment context
  • To provide guided careers information to support the student's ability to apply for and gain employment.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1.    To identify various careers paths they may wish to choose to start their career.

2.    To produce a fully updated CV ready for graduates roles applications and /or for Start-Ups creation.

3.    To establish a network of professional contacts.

Curriculum content

  • Completion of an updated CV following experiences and skills gained in their placements and skills gained during third year of studying
  • Update of on-line profile.
  • One-to-one support for job applications, research of careers /employers opportunities, preparation for interviews, etc...
  • Guest speakers to cover the range of disciplines.
  • Careers fairs organised by Careers and Employability team
  • Networking events

Assessment strategy

Assessment is non-compulsory: students will undertake it for their own benefit.

Students will be assessed through a Portfolio which will encompass three elements:

1. An updated CV following their placement experience, ,

2. A reflection on the combined Business Readiness and Placement experiences.

3. A list or mapping of Professional Network contacts developed through the Business Readiness and Experience program.

Bibliography core texts

Most of the material used will be in the form of a skills manual, continuing training briefs and independent/class exercises, plus on-line links where appropriate.
