Design Process 1

  • Module code: FN4001
  • Year: 2018/9
  • Level: 4
  • Credits: 30
  • Pre-requisites: None
  • Co-requisites: None

Summary

Design Process will complement FN4003 - Design Product 1. Throughout the delivery of Design Process 1, there will be an emphasis on challenging traditional methods and innovation through Research Design Development and Presentation, which is continually underpinned by drawing and the realisation of 2D sketchbook work in relation to initial 3D prototypes.

Aims

  • To introduce research as the basis for creative design development through various methods and resources i.e. in house archive, vintage outlets, museums, libraries, galleries and exhibitions
  • To enable the development of creative methods and approaches of recording, collating and generating ideas that inform the development of informed design outcomes
  • To enable the student to have an understanding of fabrics and colour through research, experimentation and design development
  • To understand the importance of history of dress and translating from archive pieces within the design process
  • To enable the development of visual and oral presentation skills relevant to professional contexts

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

  • Identify original sources for research as a basis for creative design and produce a series of original design ideas, which show the progression of an idea from relevant research.
  • Demonstrate confidence in the ability to evaluate research material and resolve ideas and concept through creative methods and approaches used within design development
  • Identify and evaluate specific material qualities and colour application and their appropriateness to design outcomes
  • Show an understanding of the importance of historical dress in a contemporary outcome
  • Apply appropriate visual and oral presentation skills to communicate design outcomes that are relevant to professional contexts

Curriculum content

  • Introduction to the in house archive and external resources to inform research and design development work
  • Introduction to Drawing
  • Introduction to Fabric Development (i.e. knitted & woven)
  • Introduction to presentation skills

Teaching and learning strategy

This module is predominantly studio-based with external influences from visiting HPLs who specialists in their field within fashion.  Talks around the in-house archive will feed into the design process.  The process will be carried out in sketchbooks displaying the integration of 2D and 3D design leading to finished drawings representing the design development process throughout.

Teaching methods will also include group briefings, individual and group tutorials, talks, workshops, crits, guided tours to exhibitions, self-directed research trips.

The module will make use of the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) Canvas for communication and dissemination of information between students and staff as well as making online learning materials available to all. Students should check this site on a daily basis for module information, timetables, sign-ups, updates and additional information and teaching materials.

All courses based in the Kingston School of Art offer students free access to the online video tutorial platform Lynda.com. This provides a wide range of subjects to choose from, many with downloadable exercise files, including software tutorials covering photography, graphics, web design, audio and music, CAD and Microsoft Office software, as well as courses on Business and Management skills. Some of these are embedded in the curriculum and offer additional self-paced learning, others may be taken at will by students wishing to broaden their employability skills in other areas.

Assessment strategy

Summative assessment is by 3 project folders, staged at intervals through the module. Formal written feedback will be issued after summative assessment has been completed and within 20 days of the final hand-in date. Each project will have a different focus to deliver the learning outcomes, projects will /may contain some or all of the listed: 2D design-work in sketchbook form including samples leading to a 3D prototype and a final presentation - the latter will not be summatively assessed.

Contents of the project folders will be defined by the project brief and will typically contain evidence of research, design development and a final outcome.

Students will receive formative oral feedback within a group crit and individual and group tutorials, followed by formal written feedback. During their tutorials, students will receive both feedback and feed forward on the work produced.
