  • Understand and respond professionally to a given brief from industry
  • Demonstrate an understanding of concept development used to inform the design process and design outcomes relevant to an industry brief
  • Produce a portfolio of work for each project covering research, design development and presentation appropriate to the customer
  • Produce innovative design work in conjunction with the company's requirements
  • Use appropriate communication skills to professionally present work using visual and verbal means

Curriculum content

  • A series of projects set by different companies who will provide briefings, store visits, interim reviews and attend final presentations.
  • Each project will cover key stages in the Design Process; research, design development and presentation
  • A series of talks and studio classes on related aspects i.e. trend colour fabric    appropriate to the brief
  • Presentation skills verbal and visual including digital design skills and interview techniques for Skype, in person and live communication methods

The module will be delivered through group and individual design tutorials, scheduled store and company visits, company briefs, mid-project reviews/selection by sponsors, studio-based teaching, self-directed work, group discussions, skills workshop demonstrations.  Specialist workshops IT will include CAD (Illustrator) for technical drawing and InDesign for presentation layout.

The module will make use of the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) Canvas for communication and dissemination of information between students and staff as well as making online learning materials available to all. Students should check this site on a daily basis for module information, timetables, sign-ups, updates and additional information and teaching materials.

All courses based in the Kingston School of Art offer students free access to the online video tutorial platform Lynda.com. This provides a wide range of subjects to choose from, many with downloadable exercise files, including software tutorials covering photography, graphics, web design, audio and music, CAD and Microsoft Office software, as well as courses on Business and Management skills. Assessment strategy

Summative assessment is by 3 project folders, staged at intervals through the module. Formal written feedback will be issued after summative assessment has been completed and within 20 days of the final hand-in date.

Contents of the project folders will be defined by the project brief and will typically contain evidence of research, though a research file, design development documented through sketchbook and sampling, and a final outcome which may be documented through design presentation.

Students will receive formative oral feedback individually or within a group crit.  Formal written feedback will be issued after assessment has been completed and within 20 days of the final hand in date. During tutorials, students will receive both feedback to aid reflection and to feed-forward on the work.
