  • To encourage individual creative design development towards an identified target market
  • To instil the importance of decision-making and time-management
  • To develop advanced skills through the production of a final outfit realised in 3D

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

  • Produce a comprehensive pre-collection in 2D from extensive research including sampling
  • Respond to a choice of external competition briefs producing work that is both creative and professional and market aware
  • Demonstrate an understanding of appropriate fabrics, yarn and finishes for 3D garments
  • Produce a 3D prototype (toile) based on the 2D pre-collection work

Curriculum content

  • Internal seminars and tutorials - individual and group
  • Practical skills workshops i.e. digital packages, cutting
  • Guest speakers , meetings, interviews and professional correspondence
  • Visits to fabric fairs, yarn fairs  and fashion week shows

Teaching and learning strategy

The module will be delivered through studio project folders which are linked to developing a body of work to feed into the Final Major Project. The project folders will identify the students' position within the industry, inform the student of the breadth of industry and will aid the students in developing a portfolio career.

Students will select a competition brief for a project aligned to their particular specialism.  Weekly individual tutorials with the Design tutor will enable students to track their progress and identify areas of strength to explore further.

The module will make use of the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) Canvas for communication and dissemination of information between students and staff as well as making online learning materials available to all.  Students should check this site on a daily basis for module information, timetables, sign-ups, updates and additional information and teaching materials. Additional material will be supplied through organisations, such as British Fashion Council, for sponsored competitions and industry sponsored projects.

All courses based in the Kingston School of Art offer students free access to the online video tutorial platform Lynda.com. This provides a wide range of subjects to choose from, many with downloadable exercise files, including software tutorials covering photography, graphics, web design, audio and music, CAD and Microsoft Office software, as well as courses on Business and Management skills. Some of these are embedded in the curriculum and offer additional self-paced learning, others may be taken at will by students wishing to broaden their employability skills in other areas.

Assessment strategy

Summative assessment will be on 2 project folders, which are linked to developing a body of work to feed into the Final Major Project. The project folders will identify your position within the industry, inform you of the breadth of industry and will aid you in developing a portfolio career.

Contents of the project folders will be defined by the project brief and will typically contain evidence of research, design development and a final outcome. Project Folder 1 will include a 3D prototype as part of the 2D design development work as is reflected in the higher credit value.

Formative assessment will be ongoing through oral feedback with note taking at a review or through the internal selection process for competitions, followed by written feedback at hand-in stage. You will also engage in a formative assessment continually throughout the projects through group and individual tutorials. During their tutorials, students will receive both feedback and feed forward on the work produced.
