Design Product 1 will complement Design Process 1 in the realisation of a final toile and/ or knitted piece. Projects will focus on various aspects of the design resolution process leading to the making of a product using taught technical skills. Research will include studying the in-house dress archive to replicate and produce a contemporary piece.
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
This module will be predominantly studio-based with external influences from staff and part-time lecturers who are industry practitioners. There will also be group and individual demonstrations of knitwear techniques modelling and draping techniques on the stand, workshops on creative cutting and drawing. Teaching methods will also include group briefings, individual and group tutorials, group discussions, seminars, workshops and crits.
The module will make use of the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) Canvas for communication and dissemination of information between students and staff as well as making online learning materials available to all. Students should check this site on a daily basis for module information, timetables, sign-ups, updates and additional information and teaching materials.
All courses based in the Kingston School of Art offer students free access to the online video tutorial platform Lynda.com. This provides a wide range of subjects to choose from, many with downloadable exercise files, including software tutorials covering photography, graphics, web design, audio and music, CAD and Microsoft Office software, as well as courses on Business and Management skills. Some of these are embedded in the curriculum and offer additional self-paced learning, others may be taken at will by students wishing to broaden their employability skills in other areas.

Summative assessment is by 3 project folders. Project folder 3 has a greater weighting to reflect the larger content which will be defined by the brief. Assessment will be staged at intervals through the module. Projects will include a range of 2D/3D and digital presentation techniques. Contents of the project folders will be defined by the project brief and will typically contain evidence of research, design development and a final outcome.
Formative assessment will be ongoing in the form of crits, reviews, group and individual tutorials, Formal written feedback will be issued after assessment has been completed and within 20 days of the final hand in date.
