Summary

This module is split into projects and covers the three-dimensional aspect of industrially sponsored projects. The designs in the two-dimensional portfolio within Design Process 2 will inform the realisation of a prototype (toile) garment or finalised outfit. The garments will either be completed in calico or in appropriate fabric depending on the project brief. The project may include knitwear as a final three-dimensional piece and be produced in the appropriate yarns.

Aims

  • To use and develop technical skills as part of a creative solution in response to specific industry based briefs
  • To understand silhouette and the importance of fitting, proportion through the creative cutting and toile making
  • To enable an understanding of appropriate materials, manufacture and finish of garments relevant to industry contexts
  • To enable the student to communicate design intentions through accurate technical drawing and production specification using digital design software
  • To understand the importance of organisational and planning skills to be able to manage and communicate the various stages of garment realisation

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

  • Produce a first garment or toile from design work in the Design Process portfolio
  • Demonstrate creative pattern-cutting, toiling, fitting and amending skills to create silhouette
  • Produce a fully resolved garment/s relevant to industry contexts
  • Complete detailed and accurate design specifications for each garment using digital design
  • Organise and plan the schedule and documentation of the various stages of garment realisation

Curriculum content

  • Introduction to the realisation of garments in response to an industry brief from the Design Process portfolio
  • Pattern cutting, toiling, fitting and proportion for silhouette and shape and industry standard finishes
  • An understanding of appropriate fabrics and yarns for the finished garments
  • Instruction on the use of digital design to complete technical files and design specifications of each outfit

Teaching and learning strategy

The module will be delivered through one-to-one tutorials, studio-based pattern cutting classes, modelling on the stand and toiling demonstrations, fittings and amendments, specialist techniques and knit workshops and demonstrations. There will also be instruction on the production of specification sheets and general organisational skills to enable students to appreciate final finishes in garments for customer market. 

The module will make use of the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) Canvas for communication and dissemination of information between students and staff as well as making online learning materials available to all. Students should check this site on a daily basis for module information, timetables, sign-ups, updates and additional information and teaching materials.

All courses based in the Kingston School of Art offer students free access to the online video tutorial platform Lynda.com. This provides a wide range of subjects to choose from, many with downloadable exercise files, including software tutorials covering photography, graphics, web design, audio and music, CAD and Microsoft Office software, as well as courses on Business and Management skills. Some of these are embedded in the curriculum and offer additional self-paced learning, others may be taken at will by students wishing to broaden their employability skills in other areas.

Assessment strategy

Summative assessment is by 3 project folders, staged at intervals through the module. Formal written feedback will be issued after summative assessment has been completed and within 20 days of the final hand-in date. Contents of the project folders will be defined by the project brief and will typically contain evidence of 3D technical outcomes including sampling, toiles and finished garment and 2D technical outcomes including technical files, critical path and spec pack will take place.

Formative assessment will be through oral feedback within an individual toile review. Formal written feedback will be issued after assessment has been completed and within 20 days of the final hand in date. During tutorials, students will receive both feedback to aid reflection and to feed-forward on the work.

Students will engage in a formative assessment continually throughout the projects through group and individual tutorials.
