Developing Creative Approaches to Working with Children and Young People

Summary

This final year module allows students to investigate and design a product of potential benefit to children and/or young people. Students will firstly identify an area of interest linked to a current issue, concern, gap or dilemma which may be local, national or international. They will then use the knowledge, skills and experience that they have acquired throughout their academic studies and placements to investigate and identify what could be helpful for children or young people. Students will be expected to demonstrate child-centred practice, creativity, and problem solving ability in developing an idea which will be practical use in working with children and young people in preparation for employment.

Aims

This module aims to:

  • enable students to investigate independently an issue, concern, gap or dilemma relevant to the children and young people's workforce and identify possible methods of addressing this.
  • enable students to design creative and practical solutions within a variety of media relevant to working with children and young people.
  • enable students to develop expertise and confidence in devising effective approaches to working with children and young people relevant to their future careers or study.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

  • Identify a current issue, concern, gap or dilemma impacting on children and young people
  • Critically appraise current interventions applied to the area of interest identified and consider how strategies, services and products could be further developed to address the chosen area of interest
  • Create and justify an appropriate intervention to address the chosen area of interest with reference to up-to- date knowledge about the needs of children and young people
  • Demonstrate an ability to work as part of a group or independently demonstrating creativity and the ability to solve problems

Teaching and learning strategy

This module builds on learning from Levels 4 and 5 by drawing on students' understanding of the current areas of concern and interest that are relevant work with children and young people. It specifically addresses programme learning outcomes on creativity, problem solving and communication skills and builds on learning about social pedagogic approaches introduced at Level 5.  Seminars will focus on working productively as a group to investigate an area of concern then planning and creating a method of intervention. Students will be introduced to variety of methods and tools for engaging children and young people and will be encouraged to draw on what they learned during placements to develop innovative ideas.  During seminars students are expected to present their ideas and findings in small groups and to receive and give feedback to their peers. This is intended to support their understanding and help them to develop their ideas.

Assessment strategy

Formative assessment:

In small groups students will be required to identify a current area of interest impacting on children and young people. After undertaking their initial investigation of the topic, they will make a presentation to the class, justifying their choice of topic and outlining their plans to design a response, using relevant examples. During class discussion they will receive feedback from peers and tutors about the identified area of interest.

Summative assessment: this will be assessed by

Group or individual presentation of a method of intervention or product to address a current concern relating to children and young people and a statement of 1,500 words which justifies the area of concern and the method of intervention chosen (100%)
