Facilitating Women-Centred Care

Summary

This module provides you with the knowledge and skills to provide woman centred care. Key aspects of working with other professional groups are reviewed and related to practice and women's experience of care, so as to help support you in the transition from student to accountable, autonomous practitioner.

Aims

  • Assess the woman, fetus and neonate's individual needs in the provision of evidence based care
  • Develop the student's ability to be an accountable and autonomous practitioner
  • Enable the student to examine the role of the midwife in the provision of evidence based care

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

  • Critically discuss the women's experience of pregnancy, childbearing and the postnatal period
  • Reflect upon and critically analyse physiology and pathophysiology which may impact on care for women
  • Utilize appropriate manoeuvres in managing obstetric emergencies
  • Recognise the need to refer to other professionals
  • Review the role governance in relation to woman centred care discussing how ethical issues and dilemmas may impinge on care
  • Critically evaluate clinical guidelines and evidenced based practice and employ these to provide effective midwifery care

Curriculum content

  • Woman centred care and the woman's experience of care
  • National evidence and its translation into local policies and guidelines
  • Interprofessional communication and tools to facilitate its effectiveness
  • Perceptions of risk and how it relates to midwifery practice
  • Midwifery leadership including assessment, planning, implementing  and evaluating care needs
  • Physiology and pathophysiology as related to midwifery management in providing safe care
  • Promoting normal birth in a variety of settings
  • Deviation from the norm during pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period
  • Midwifery emergencies and management
  • Pharmacology and medicines management

Teaching and learning strategy

A variety of teaching and learning strategies will be utilised within this module. The use of lead lectures, time for directed reading, discussions and role play will enable students to explore topics in depth. Study space will be used to support the teaching and learning, relevant materials will be available within the module including power point presentations and other E-learning materials.
