Final Major Project

  • Module code: FN6004
  • Year: 2018/9
  • Level: 6
  • Credits: 60
  • Pre-requisites: None
  • Co-requisites: None

Summary

This module covers all 2D and 3D aspects relating to the development of the final collection and exit portfolio. It is the 'capstone' project, which is the culmination of your learning over the three years. The module will cover the three main stages of designing for fashion, research, design development and presentation. As a designer you will be supported by a design tutor and a pattern cutting tutor to realise the main body of work, this will reflect industry practice and enable you to engage with a team collaborating to create original work.

The 2D Project Folder will contain collection development, promotional package and a technical folder. Collection development within this module will support the three-dimensional outcome of a capsule collection. Through discussion with the teaching team and with formative feedback you will decide the focus of your major project (Final Project Folder), which will be either 2D or 3D focused.

In all cases, careful consideration should be given to the presentation of the final collection, and should take the form of a comprehensive promotional package presented in a professional format to promote you and your work as you enter the industry. You will produce a creative CV and covering letter to accompany the creative promotional package that should be suitable to mail out as a hard copy or electronically to an identified target market. A technical folder will include specification sheets, collection planner, and other means to communicate technical instruction, this will be submitted with the promotional package to create a professional package.

3D projects within this module cover all developmental stages, from initial silhouettes to final patterns and toiles from the specification sheets in the 2D technical package. The capsule collection will be the production of final garments from their pre-collection, management of the collection and developing the ability to direct technical staff by using the collection planner.

The module will be delivered in three stages:
1. 2D Project Folder (collection development, technical folder and promotional package)
2. 3D Project Folder (capsule collection - 4 looks)
3. Final Project Folder (with a focus on either 3D or 2D)

Aims

  • To enable you to explore in-depth processes from research through design development to final presentation in a project folder
  • To  communicate a personal response through research and design development
  • To translate the stages from two-dimensional design work into a three-dimensional capsule collection
  • To enable you to manage and direct the production of all garments to an industry standard considering finish and specialist manufacturing and including the process of completing accurate specifications
  • To enable you to document the processes leading up to a collection, including cutting and toiling
  • To follow the processes involved in producing a promotional package for press and potential employers

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

  • Plan and manage the process from portfolio to final product to a professional standard documenting each stage in the preparation of the final collection
  • Evidence the three stages in developing a capsule collection in 2D from research and design development to a finished presentation
  • Produce a comprehensive and creative project folder, which will be used for first destination interviews
  • Produce a capsule collection based on the collection planner
  • Demonstrate innovation and collaborate with external specialists
  • Produce a professional, creative promotional package based on the capsule collection

Curriculum content

  • Research and design development methods leading towards a professional portfolio presentation.
  • Collection development which represents a vision and look appropriate for a contemporary fashion market, including research which may cover fabric, swatching, colour referencing, sourcing, knitting, printing, finishing techniques and trims.
  • Silhouette, shape and product ranging and will be drawn from the research resulting in directional and innovative pieces which will form the basis of the capsule collection.
  • Toiling in appropriate neutral fabrics to use as a prototype for the final product
  • Collection planner covering all stages of manufacture and use of specialist technicians and equipment specification sheets detailing fabric trims and finishes
  • Consultation & negotiation with external & internal specialists
  • Skills workshops including knitwear, garment manufacturing, photography and digital media,

Teaching and learning strategy

The module will be delivered through individual and group tutorials, crits, reviews, seminars and workshops, internal and external guest speakers will teach into the module.  Students will produce all supporting work for their capsule collection in sketchbooks, journals, sample and resource books.

You will actively seek out yarn and fabric sponsors, printing facilities and collaborate with accessory specialists where applicable, developing a network of professional contacts. In addition, you may collaborate with students from other disciplines within the School or Faculty, to produce your final promotional package including a website.

3D work will be supported by pattern-cutting classes, draping demonstrations, knitwear workshops, and garment manufacturing workshops. You will engage with teaching and learning through contact with tutors and technicians in toile reviews, final garment reviews, planning, tutorials and update meetings.

The module will make use of the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) Canvas for communication and dissemination of information between students and staff as well as making online learning materials available to all. You should check this site on a daily basis for module information, timetables, sign-ups, updates and additional information and teaching materials.

All courses based in the Kingston School of Art offer you free access to the online video tutorial platform Lynda.com. This provides a wide range of subjects to choose from, many with downloadable exercise files, including software tutorials covering photography, graphics, web design, audio and music, CAD and Microsoft Office software, as well as courses on Business and Management skills. Some of these are embedded in the curriculum and offer additional self-paced learning, others may be taken at will by students wishing to broaden their employability skills in other areas.

Assessment strategy

Summative assessment on the final project folder will take place on completion of the 3 stages.

You will produce and submit all supporting 2D work for your collection through the project folders, this will include research, sketchbooks, promotional package, technical package, collection planner, sample and resource books in the final submission.

The 2D Project Folder - includes research, design development, promotional package and technical folder.

3D Project Folder (capsule collection - 4 fully realised looks, samples and toiles.

Final Project Folder

  • Option 1, 2D design outcome
  • Option 2, 3D design outcome

Formative assessment on the body of work including 2D & 3D projects supported by a professional package will be through oral feedback within toile reviews and at key points in the development of the collection.  Toile reviews will take place for one week in Teaching Week 17 and, through guidance with the tutor, students will decide whether the final part of the final   project folder will have a focus on 2D or 3D. The formative feedback given at toile review will be a key point within the final project folder.

Feedback and feedforward will be in the form of ongoing weekly individual tutorials with staff supporting the work.
