Summary

This module will enable you to explore the continuum from fertilization to the neonate and how this impacts on integration into the family.

Aims

  • Recognise issues surrounding the development of the embryo and fetus.
  • Understand adaptation to extra uterine life and the development of the neonate

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

  • Outline the development of the embryo and fetus
  • Describe the physiology of the fetus and explain how the fetus adapts to extra uterine life
  • Recognise the normal behaviour and development of the full term neonate
  • Explore the routine antenatal and neonatal screening procedures
  • Describe neonatal nutrition and feeding
  • Discuss the development of parenting skills to support the newborn

  • Fertilisation, implantation and placental development
  • Embryonic development from conception
  • Fetal development
  • Fetal physiology (to include circulation)
  • Fetal anatomy (to include fetal skull and internal structures)
  • Socio economic influences on the development of embryo and fetus (Barker's hypothesis, maternal nutrition and lifestyle)
  • Monitoring of normal fetal development
  • Assessment of fetal well being
  • Adaptation to extra uterine life (to include physiological jaundice, thermoregulation etc)
  • Initial assessment of the neonate at birth
  • Ongoing assessment of neonatal well being
  • Normal behaviour and development of the neonate
  • Neonatal attachment and bonding theories
  • Neonatal nutrition (to include the implications of breast feeding and formula feeding)
  • Antenatal screening programmes for fetal abnormality

Teaching and learning strategy

A variety of teaching and learning strategies will be utilised within this module. The use of lead lectures, time for directed reading reflection and discussions will enable students to explore topics in depth. Study space will be used to support the teaching and learning, relevant materials will be available within the module including power point presentations and other E-learning materials.

Students will have the opportunity to undertake practice questions.

Summative assessment

Students will be able to choose from a choice of three predetermined questions or scenarios related to the indicative content. The work will be supported by evidence and appropriately referenced to demonstrate the development of academic skills.
