Integrated Research Project

  • Module code: FA7501
  • Year: 2018/9
  • Level: 7
  • Credits: 60
  • Pre-requisites: None
  • Co-requisites: None

Summary

This is the defining module for the MFA students drawing on your previous knowledge and experience at postgraduate level. The module will consist of you working on, and developing, a self-initiated and independent research capstone project for public exhibition and/or publication. You will reflect on your prior learning and apply this together with the knowledge and skills acquired through contact and dialogue with guest speakers and the examination and interrogation of current models of practice-based research. You will set a demanding and challenging project or body of practical work. You will be expected to demonstrate a high level of professionalism and a command of the negotiation skills required as well as sharing risk and challenging yourselves individually.

Aims

  • Provide an opportunity for students to participate and contribute fully in a project related to their professional aspirations
  • Enable students to develop in-depth practice research and written skills to support their individual careers
  • Enable students to continue to advance their knowledge through the integration of theory and practice, engagement in interdisciplinary teamwork and the communication of ideas in the final presentation and exhibition.
  • Provide further opportunities for students to monitor, build and reflect upon their personal, educational and career development in relation to further professional practice within the context of research study at PhD level.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

  • Develop an ability to define, critically evaluate and apply advanced research skills and an understanding of the current issues within contemporary fine art.
  • Engage with current professional networks and organisations,
  • Identify and focus on developing creative solutions within an interdisciplinary team context
  • Convey a deeper understanding of both Individual and collaborative working processes
  • Effectively and constructively engage within a team and integrate independent professional study.
  • Successfully communicate research outcomes to a wider audience and demonstrate a deeper understanding of relevant individual directions within the field of contemporary fine art.

Curriculum content

  • A specialist visiting lecture programme, including guest speakers who will introduce students to professional research and practice issues
  • Examination and interrogation of current models of fine art research through close relationship with the Contemporary Fine Art Research Centre and the large body of PhD students working within it
  • Presentation methods and skills, including professional networking

Teaching and learning strategy

Students will be required to research and fluently engage with their professional counterparts. They will interrogate current practice research issues, explore research presentations and compile a research dossier documenting the stages of the development of their practical work, which supports practice work in either electronic or paper format. Overall learning and teaching methods include lectures, workshops, the critical examination of current practice research methods, group and individual presentations, formative feedback and summative assessment.

The module will make use of the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) Canvas for communication and dissemination of information between students and staff as well as making online learning materials available to all. Students should check this site on a daily basis for module information, timetables, sign-ups, updates and additional information and teaching materials.

All courses based in the Kingston School of Art offer students free access to the online video tutorial platform Lynda.com. This provides a wide range of subjects to choose from, many with downloadable exercise files, including software tutorials covering photography, graphics, web design, audio and music, CAD and Microsoft Office software, as well as courses on Business and Management skills. Some of these are embedded in the curriculum and offer additional self-paced learning, others may be taken at will by students wishing to broaden their employability skills in other areas.

Assessment strategy

Assessment will be based on a 3,000 word reflective research dossier a body of practical work and a final Documentation File. The body of practical work will consist of resolved final work and preparatory work (plans, sketches and testing of relevant processes). The research dossier serves as a reference point against which the progress and development of the project work and presentation may subsequently be measured, and will have the potential to form the basis for further study at PhD level. The Documentation File, to be submitted digitally, will present the main body of study in an easy to navigate format, which can be used in exhibition, or as marketing material by both the students and presented to the University audience.

In consultation with their tutor, students are expected to generate their own area of research and study. The ability to determine and follow a path of independent and/or collaborative study which runs concurrently to, and engages with, the taught aspects of the module, form a significant aspect of the assessment criteria for this module.  There will be opportunities for formative assessment through informal feedback and feed forward tutorials and ongoing discussions, research and practical work.

Research Dossier (3,000 words)        30%

Submission of a body of work            65%

Documentation File                             5%

(FA7501) Coursework: A dissertation of 3,000 words setting out and developing ideas explored in the practical work presented and a digital Documentation File.
