Summary

This module complements Design Process 1 and Design Product 1 modules and introduces broader fashion skills such as textiles, imagery through photography fashion illustration and digital design skills. The module is made up of a number of projects which focus on historical research, contemporary design and social aspects. This module introduces students to professional world skills such as time management and presentation skills.

Aims

  • To enable an understanding of the professional contexts, techniques and process of other practitioners
  • To encourage experimentation using a variety of textile applications within knit, print and surface pattern incorporating the appropriate use of colour, material and techniques
  • To develop skills in photography and use creatively in a styling shoot
  • To enable the student to source, analyse and interpret a range of visual material, techniques and media used to inform the development of their own image-making skills and visual language
  • To introduce the student to time-management skills that will enable them to self-manage and work independently to set deadlines

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the ability to research and interpret the techniques and process of other practitioners
  • Demonstrate confidence in the use of photography in a contemporary outcome
  • Demonstrate confidence in a variety of textile applications within knit, print and surface pattern using appropriate use of colour, material and techniques
  • Evaluate appropriate research material and apply a range of techniques and media to visually and professionally communicate ideas and concepts
  • Apply organisational skills that will facilitate a time-efficient response to independent and directed studies

Curriculum content

  • Projects in this module will introduce the student to multi-disciplinary skills including knitted textiles, photography and styling, and illustration
  • Sustainable fashion will be explored through the students professional practice

Teaching and learning strategy

This module will be predominantly studio-based with external influences from staff and HPL who are industry practitioners. There will also be group and individual demonstrations of knitwear techniques workshops on drawing, photography, digital media and presentation skills. Teaching methods will also include group briefings, individual and group tutorials, group discussions, seminars, workshops and crits.

The module will make use of the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) Canvas for communication and dissemination of information between students and staff as well as making online learning materials available to all. Students should check this site on a daily basis for module information, timetables, sign-ups, updates and additional information and teaching materials.

All courses based in the Kingston School of Art offer students free access to the online video tutorial platform Lynda.com. This provides a wide range of subjects to choose from, many with downloadable exercise files, including software tutorials covering photography, graphics, web design, audio and music, CAD and Microsoft Office software, as well as courses on Business and Management skills. Some of these are embedded in the curriculum and offer additional self-paced learning, others may be taken at will by students wishing to broaden their employability skills in other areas.

Assessment strategy

Summative assessment is by 3 project folders, staged at intervals through the module. Formal written feedback will be issued after summative assessment has been completed and within 20 days of the final hand-in date.  Each project will have a different focus to deliver the learning outcomes and will/ may comprise technical folders, samples, journals, prototypes, design development work and photoshoots.

Contents of the project folders will be defined by the project brief and will typically contain evidence of research, design development and a final outcome.

Students will receive formative oral feedback within a group crit and individual and group tutorials, followed by formal written feedback. During their tutorials, students will receive both feedback and feed forward on the work produced.
