Summary

This module will enable you to explore public health issues from both a local and national perspective, and to care for clients holistically. You will also analyse a range of theories and concepts of health promotion and education and discuss how they could be used in relation to health promotion / health education in midwifery practice.

Aims

  • Understand the midwife's role in public health and the changing context of care, with reference to local and national initiatives
  • Consider the potential socio economic / cultural implications on health / public health when providing individualised midwifery care
  • Apply health promotion / adult education theory when promoting health and providing health education to women and their families.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

  • Discuss the key public health issues and the impact of social, environmental and lifestyle factors related to maternal and family health
  • Discuss local and national public health strategies and the implications for midwifery practice
  • Demonstrate the importance of inter professional collaboration in partnership with women in the promotion of public health
  • Apply knowledge of health promotion theory to facilitate healthy behaviours for women and their families
  • Apply knowledge of adult education theory when providing health education / parent education to women and their families.

  • Contemporary government public health targets and strategies
  • The midwife's role in promoting and improving health
  • Models of health promotion
  • Educational theory: Adult education theories - androgogy /pedagogy; learning theories; Maslow's hierarchy of needs
  • Teaching skills for parent education: leading groups; aims and objectives; teaching methods; setting woman centred learning contracts; evaluation
  • Global health, pandemics, epidemics and crises
  • Safeguarding including domestic violence/child protection/sexual abuse and the impact on health
  • Determinants of health: socio cultural and socio economic perspectives and impact on childbearing eg. physical health, age, mental health, obesity, anorexia, travellers, immigrants, asylum seekers, learning disability, minority ethnic groups, FGM, substance misuse)
  • Maternal and infant mortality / morbidity national and global trends
  • Breastfeeding and the public health impact
  • Modifiable communicable diseases (role of Health Protection Agency)
  • Sexual health: sexually transmitted infections: screening, trends, effects, implications for women / childbirth, and reducing the spread of infection.
  • Contraception
  • Immunisation programmes
  • Well women care (to include preconception care, screening programmes: cervical, ovarian, breast cancer)

Teaching and learning strategy

A variety of teaching and learning strategies will be utilised within this module. The use of lead lectures, time for directed reading and discussions will enable students to explore topics in depth. Study space will be used to support the teaching and learning, relevant materials will be available within the module including power point presentations and specific online activities.

Assessment strategy

Formative

The student will choose a client group and undertake a seminar presentation that focuses on a public health issue related to midwifery practice. The seminar will be presented to peers and the module leader which will enable discussion of material and ideas, development of presentation /health promotion skills and provide opportunity for feedback/feed forward.

Summative

A written proposal for a learning resource (eg. leaflet, poster, on-line resource, pamphlet) on the student's topic area, to be used when working with women to promote health and well-being (3000 words).

The proposal should include the following:

  • Discussion of the public health issue, including the impact of social, environmental and lifestyle factors / rationale for choice of topic and identification of client group
  • Discussion of local / national public health strategies and the implications for the role of the midwife, including inter-professional collaboration
  • Discussion of how the learning resource could be developed and how the midwife could use this to promote health, including application of health promotion theory and educational theory.
