This module is a core module for students studying Sport Science; Sport Science (Coaching) and the Foundation degree in Sport Coaching. It introduces theories related to coaching and leadership roles in sport and exercise, and it aims to create environments where students can develop their own practical competencies in related coaching and leadership skills. It also aims to provide students with the experiential basis necessary for them to appreciate and understand sport as an academic subject.

The teaching and learning strategy of the module will comprise lectures, tutorials, and coaching practical sessions, demonstrations of coaching practise and group work. Coaching sessions will be used to allow students to further consolidate their understanding of the theories and to encourage peer communication and discussion. It is an expectation that students arrive to the practical sessions suitably prepared to participate which will be advised in advance where necessary. In order to further support students learning, additional material such as key readings and lecture materials will be provided online in addition to study tasks designed to promote the development of independent study skills.

Lecture, seminar and practical sessions will provide practical feed forward guidance and formative experimental opportunities to help students achieve their full potential in the summative assessments. Further formative assessment will comprise practice coaching sessions, group discussion, peer evaluation, group tasks and presentations in practical and seminar sessions. These formative tasks will allow students to monitor both progress through feedback from peers and feed forward advice to develop understanding and application for summative assessment. Summative assessment for this module will typically take the form of a written report and up to a maximum of four short, student led, coaching sessions on particular skills within different sport. These sessions will be examined for the appropriateness of level, language, development of the skillset and communication of the coach. Independent learning skills will also be developed throughout the module through directed reading and other activities, to supplement formal teaching and will be necessary to achieve the learning outcomes.
