Originally intended to adorn the ceremony of enthronement of an Archbishop, but not completed in time, this, the greatest of Beethoven's choral works, was written during the same period as Symphony No.9. It is both a monument to faith and an expression of triumph over personal hardships which increasingly affected him at this time. Ranging over a gamut of moods and feelings, it is colourful, dramatic and sublimely beautiful.
