Young Scientists Virtual Event 2021

We are excited to announce our Young Scientists Virtual Event for children and adolescents aged 4-17, which will run across various sessions from Tuesday 1st June to Friday 4th June 2021. Your child(ren) can join us for a day of participating in exciting research as well as gaining insight into how Developmental Psychologists try to understand how children develop.

Please click here to register your child(ren). Please note that this form will need to be filled out for each child participating. (REGISTRATION NOW CLOSED)

What is it?

An exciting opportunity for children to take part in age-appropriate psychology research, learn about psychology, and discover what psychologists do. Your child will be asked to participate in a number of tasks, varying between 20-60 minutes each, investigating the way in which children process information such as words, shapes, and emotions.

What would I do on the day?

Your child will engage in individual research tasks over Microsoft Teams with a researcher.  For child protection and safeguarding purposes, it is essential that a parent is present on the video call during the child's participation. Some live studies can be conducted on smartphones, however, others will require a device such as a laptop, iPad or desktop computer.

Other studies do not require live participation so the relevant materials / questionnaires will be emailed to you for completion by Friday 4th June.

Your child can complete as many activities as he/she would like and will receive a certificate after the event as a thank you for his/her participation.

When is it?

During the summer half-term holidays so a great, free opportunity for your budding little scientist(s) during their school holiday! The event will begin with an interactive group session and the remainder of the day will consist of individual research tasks. You will be sent nearer the time a personalised schedule of tasks to complete via video call or in your own time during that day.

Please note you do not need to be available for the entire day (9.30am-5pm) - research tasks will be allocated to your child upon registration and you will be sent a schedule with timings and further details nearer the time. To ensure accessibility, the same studies will run throughout the week so feel free to join us on any day!

Data information

Participation is voluntary, and you will have the right to withdraw at any given time with no questions asked. All data collected will be kept confidential and anonymised for the purpose of our research. Unfortunately, we will not be able to give you specific information about how your child has performed on the tasks. We will however send you a newsletter outlining our findings and the important work your child has done by becoming a young scientist for the day.

This event is run by Dr Elisa Back and the Developing Minds Lab within the Department of Psychology at Kingston University London. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it will run virtually via Microsoft Teams.
