Department of Social Work and Social Care Annual Conference 2023

As societies around the world deal with multiple crises, including the devastating impact of war, pandemic and poverty, social workers are among the many professions seeking to support individuals and families with their mental health. Increased awareness and understanding of mental illness and new trauma-informed approaches are helping to shape social work practice. In order to highlight some of these developments, our 2023 social work conference will bring together professionals, researchers and academics from a range of countries to examine the changing role of mental health social work in these challenging times.

 9.45 Conference opens – introduction by the Chair (Professor Malcolm Payne) and Dr Wilson Muleya, Head of Department  

10.00 – 11.00 – Three plenary speakers, 20 mins each 

• Dr Lynn Tang, University of Liverpool – ‘Working with Chinese mental health service users in the UK'. 
• Professor Sarah Vicary, Open University – ‘Using interpreters in Mental Health Act assessments'. 
• Dr Tessa Morgan, University of Cambridge, ‘How are social needs of young people with social work involvement characterised by CAMHS?' 

11.00 - 11.15 - Plenary discussion/questions

• Dr Reima Maglajlic, University of Sussex – ‘Co-producing knowledge on distress caused by political conflict – lessons from Bosnia and Herzegovina'
