A great favourite of the repertoire, Elgar's masterpiece broke new ground in terms of the English oratorio tradition when it appeared in 1900. Soloists, choir and orchestra are fused into an overall symphonic structure which owes much to the influence of Wagner. The Catholic Elgar here sets a poem by Cardinal Newman (who has recently been beatified), which depicts the death of a holy man and the journey of his soul to his Maker, in richly textured, moving and imaginative music.
