What is meant by the concept 'Social participation' post stroke?

A meta-ethnographic review of the views of community dwelling stroke survivors in the UK.

Research suggests participation is an important construct and a valued goal to stroke survivors. But there is currently no consensus on a definition of participation that reflects experiences and challenges of people with stroke. This review aimed to identify, appraise and synthesise qualitative research on stroke survivors' views of their experiences of social participation. Eleven studies met the inclusion criteria. This review suggests that stroke survivors re-establish continuity and meaning in their lives post stroke by drawing on self-management skills and supportive networks to build their confidence to overcome various problems. The ability of the stroke survivor to accept and adapt to situations by changing their behaviour could be seen as one central factor to social participation post stroke.

How do people post stroke and carers cope with stroke challenges?        

A review of qualitative research on the people post-stroke and informal carers' perspectives throughout the first year after stroke.

Qualitative research has contributed largely to understand how people post stroke and their carers cope with their life's challenges. However, most research has focused on these views separately. Thus, this study aimed to identify and synthesise both perspectives. Twenty-two studies were included and findings suggest a gradual changing in how people cope with stroke through time. Both people post-stroke and carers emphasised the importance of the ability to restructure life's views and goals, understand what happened and accept uncertainty. Their mutual support in finding new solutions to the daily life challenges and active involvement in rehabilitation should be promoted.

The researchers will discuss the challenges that arose when completing the above mentioned reviews.
