Our Japanese modules

Our Japanese modules will be taught face to face at Penrhyn Road campus.

At the end of each semester-long module, there will be two assessments: Reading & Writing (in-class) and an Oral Assessment.

Please note: KLS assessments cannot be re-scheduled.

Please also note: a minimum of 10 students is required in order for a course to run. Should any course not recruit enough students, it will be cancelled.

Japanese courses offered

Japanese Level 1

This module aims to give learners a basic knowledge of reading, listening, spoken and written skills in a dynamic and communicative way, through individual, pair and group work and studio-based and authentic texts. The focus is on accuracy as well as communication.

There are two level 1 groups in October, both will be tough face to face (in the classroom at) Penryn Road.

  • Entry requirements: None
  • Level 1 module is offered in October 2024 and January 2025
  • Method of delivery: Face to face at Penrhyn Road
  • Timetable for October 2024 courses: Group 1 – Tuesdays 4-6pm; Group 2  Tuesdays, 6-8pm
  • Timetable for January 2025 courses: Tuesdays, 4-6pm

Japanese Level 2

This module is designed to provide near-beginners with the foreign language skills to enable them to interact satisfactorily in survival situations and social encounters in the foreign country and to be aware of related aspects of the foreign culture and environment.

  • Entry requirements: Completion of Level 1 or three months' prior language learning
  • Level 2 module is offered in October 2024 and January 2025
  • Method of delivery: Face to face at Penrhyn Road
  • Timetable for January 2025 courses: Tuesdays, 6-8pm

Japanese Level 3

This module is designed to develop the language competency already acquired by students. It focuses on developing the levels of communication in all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing). Students will improve and consolidate the knowledge of grammar and vocabulary acquired previously. The module also engages with aspects of the language's culture and society as it aims to provide students with a wider context for language learning.

  • Entry requirements: Completion of Level 2 or six months' prior language learning
  • Level 3 module is offered in October 2024 and January 2025
  • Method of delivery: face to face at Penrhyn Road
  • Timetable for January 2025 course: Thursdays, 4-6pm

Japanese Level 4

This module aims to develop skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing Japanese. It lays emphasis on communication and comprehension skills but also builds on the grammar base acquired previously. Topics covered earlier will be revised and extended and new themes introduced which will develop learners' understanding of the society and culture of contemporary Japanese.

  • Entry requirements: Completion of Level 3 or one year's prior language learning or equivalent of level A1 of CEFR
  • Level 4 module is offered in January 2025
  • Method of delivery: face to face at Penrhyn Road
  • Timetable for January 2025 course: Thursdays, 6-8pm

Teaching Block 1 (semester 1):

  • Week commencing 7 October 2023 to week commencing 9 December 2024 (10 weeks).

Teaching Block 2 (semester 2):

  • Week commencing 20 January 2025 to week commencing 24 March 2025 (10 weeks).

  • Penrhyn Road campus, Kingston University.

Course fees

  • Kingston University students: free. (You will be required to purchase the course textbook independently at the beginning of the course. Your tutor will provide details in the first class).
  • Members of the public: £225 per semester or £420 for two semesters.
  • Kingston University alumni: £210 per semester or £400 for two semesters.
  • Kingston University staff: £80 per semester.
