Applied Linguistics for TESOL MA: What our students say

Student profiles

Don't just take our word for it – here's what students say about what it's like to study at Kingston University.

Ines Grgurinovic

Name: Ines Grgurinovic
Course: Applied Linguistics for Language Teaching MA

I chose to study at Kingston University primarily because of its high standards and the fact my degree will be recognised worldwide, enabling me to teach languages without any additional qualification or certificate. The University offers amazing learning facilities and study resources with a lot of student support, which was obvious from my very first research and communication I had with the university staff.

My course was a perfect choice for me. It was very well organised in terms of timetable and conveniently, all my lectures were held at the same location, in the immediate vicinity of the town centre and train/bus stations. The lecturers were dedicated to helping us progress at every step of the way, all being very approachable and available, reducing students' insecurities as well as demonstrating expertise in their individual fields of research.

The syllabus covers all the relevant topics in the field of applied linguistics and always focuses on the latest significant research. It gave me a deep understanding of applied linguistics, of the technicalities of teaching different languages and the nature of the learning process. I would highlight the advantage of the course combining theory and practice, with micro teaching sessions, material and syllabus creation assignments.

We also had the opportunity to learn an additional language for free and analyse the learning process from the perspective of the learner, which was a highly valuable experience. I strongly believe I now have a lot to offer to any future students and institutions I will work for.

I believe Kingston's main strengths are its high-quality staff, the variety of courses it offers, its location and well-equipped facilities (a great library being the most important one for me).  Also, food and beverages and other recreational services make it a very accommodating place for students who are planning to spend considerable time in the University's premises, either studying or socialising.

Now that I have graduated I already have a few offers and more opportunities are opening up. I just have to decide which country I want to go to and teach in next!
