Course eligibility

  • UK resident and live in London
  • Aged 18+
  • Do not hold a Level 4 qualification or above
  • Either employed (and learning less than LLW) or unemployed/economically inactive
  • Proficient in written and spoken English

Course description

This course introduces the concept of sustainability and its impact upon civil engineering and construction. It incorporates a consideration of the stages of design, including demolition, possible reuse, recycling, sustainable materials, techniques and design and construction methods.

The subject will be built up in a systematic way starting with a historical background and the concept of sustainability, including social, political, and environmental issues.

The course also introduces the basic principles of engineering design context and provides practical knowledge on using surveying instruments, along with computer aided design (CAD).

You will develop awareness of current sustainability agenda including low carbon initiative, understanding principle of engineering design and key soft skills such as team-working, leadership, communication, and competence in using surveying equipment and CAD computing.

Example course structure

Modules:
  1. Principles of Sustainability in Construction
    Sustainable construction principles and issues
  2. Engineering Design
    Design process from conceptual to completion including design appraisal through sketches, CAD and model making
  3. Land Surveying
    Principle of land surveying including use of related equipment

Expectations of students

Students are expected to attend the face-to-face sessions on Wednesdays from 10am to 3pm at Penrhyn Road campus, Kingston University, from 3 October to 21 November 2022 (two months), so students should be able to commit to this.

Students are also expected:

  • To be an active participant in the programme.
  • To complete all the workbooks funding paperwork and the accredited unit.
  • To undertake a work-based project (this will be supplied by us if you are not currently working)
  • To participate in all the group online workshops and one-to-one coaching sessions.
